Patterns

Tiles mark zones of control. They are found primarily in places where hygiene is not just a function but a necessity. Where cleanliness becomes a discipline, they replace materiality with function. They are both a measure and a means – directed against humans and intended for them. Without humans, they would be superfluous; it is only through humans that they become necessary.

Their highly sterile, smooth surface allows for endless repetition of cleaning without leaving any traces. Touch is neutralised, action erased, memory wiped out. As in an operating theatre, nothing remains: no history, no intimacy, no emotion.
